risking that he or she will miss much of what makes life worth living. There is no

people are afraid of success, who is afraid of money in the bank, a nice home and a

Assessment

The first step toward a goal or a vision is the honest evaluation of one\'s current
situation. The risk? Discovering all the little failures so carefully covered up,
justified and explained away. The risk is discovering unhappiness, or financial
stress, or the comfortable rut one is in and the accompanying resistance to change.
The man or woman, who can confront where he or she is and can say it, can begin to
move forward into the world of action. And, when one begins to make things work
right in his or her own world, the external world begins to align and support action
and purpose. All one must do to see this is to make a decision on some difficult
matter-action; ideas and resources immediately begin to move in support of the
decision. Even other people who know nothing of the decision may offer help of some
kind.

Risk

The definition of risk comes from \"riskcare\" a word meaning to dare to sail close to
cliffs. Sailing in a race, one can win by lengthening the distance sailed on an
advantageous heading before tacking. The closer to the cliffs, the more advantage.
But such a strategy carries a risk because of the cliffs where one could lose the
race, one\'s boat, or even one\'s life.
But one person\'s risk is another\'s \"foolishness.\" One individual might not even set
foot in a boat, because one time he or she got in a boat and became seasick. \"Never
again,\" is the refrain from then on. There are many excuses to avoid life. The
contented person doesn\'t want the boat to rock-she\'s satisfied and \"knows\" that
change is dangerous, that failure and disruption await. She buys tons of life
insurance, changes her oil every 3,000 miles, and spends her days trying to avoid

But watch Brett Favre in a two-minute drill sometime. He\'s already assured of a
place in the Football Hall of Fame, already has more than enough money, but there
he is, making long downfield passes risking interception and further injury. Why
does he do it?

He loves the game and he wants to win another Super bowl. He is very much alive.
Teams and individuals \"playing it safe\" seldom excite spectators or win games. What
is duller than a team with the victory safely in hand, trying short running plays,
making sure nobody fumbles, risking very little, falling on the ball? Or, even a
lopsided game with one team in complete control? Perhaps the only thing duller is a

The \"lesson\" life teaches is very often:\" Don\'t try, or you\'ll fail. Don\'t reach for
something because a long time ago you did and you failed-and we sure wouldn\'t want
to go through that again, would we?\" Grade B movie plots are full of the \"person
afraid of a commitment because he or she got dumped.\" Unfortunately, people do live
out of past upsets and hurts, which justify not risking further action. And, just as
there are grade B movies, there are also grade B lives.

The price of safety

The tragedy of the person who lives a mediocre \"fence-sitting\" life is this: He or
she thinks fear is the perfect reason not to take action to participate in life.
What they don\'t realize is that most successful people act in spite of fear. They
don\'t allow fear to run their lives. No one is suggesting you go over -board when it
comes to talking risks! Risking your last dollar at the gambling tables in Las Vegas
would be foolish. However, there are appropriate risks that would be foolish to pass
up. Without risk there is no growth. Without growth there isn\'t much chance of
happiness, real satisfaction or fulfillment.
Avoiding risk, playing it safe, being uncommitted-that\'s what people do when they
let fear take over. It is surprising, then, that we are fascinated with the
risk-takers and those who win out over long odds? They are in pursuit of something.
They are committed to life.
